Across the world today science and biblical faith are seen by some as in conflict. In South Africa this sense of conflict is most sharply felt in our schools, and by our youth. Since 2010 the Theory of Evolution has been required teaching in the South African curriculum, and many of the youth of our churches are now seeking guidance on this potent issue.

As pastors and teachers, what should we say? How do we equip young believers to stand strong in their faith while engaging honestly with the scientific knowledge they encounter in the classroom? These questions lie at the heart of the Science and Biblical Faith Dialogue.

A Church Called to Engage

The church has a rich history of intellectual engagement. Many of the early pioneers of modern science — from Kepler to Newton — saw their work as an act of worship, exploring the order and beauty of God's creation. Yet today, many Christians feel caught between two worlds: the world of faith and the world of scientific inquiry.

This article argues that the perceived conflict is not inevitable. While tensions exist, there are thoughtful, faithful ways to understand both Scripture and the natural world without abandoning either. The dialogue calls the church to engage wisely and responsibly with science while remaining faithful to its mission of proclaiming the gospel.

Why This Matters in South Africa

Since evolution became a required part of the national curriculum, South African Christian families have faced a pressing challenge. Young people encounter evolutionary biology in the classroom, often without a framework for integrating it with their faith. The result can be confusion, doubt, or a quiet drift away from the church.

African Enterprise South Africa responded by convening private leadership summits that brought together six South African and international scientists — each with a strong personal faith — to explore these questions in depth. The goal was not to produce a single "official" position, but to model thoughtful, respectful dialogue and to provide resources for pastors, teachers, and parents.

Harmony or Conflict?

The title of this article poses a question rather than a conclusion. For some, science and biblical faith are in harmony; for others, they remain in tension. What matters is that believers are equipped to think clearly, ask honest questions, and remain rooted in Christ. The Science and Biblical Faith Dialogue exists to support that journey.

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." — Psalm 19:1

Whether we look through a telescope or a microscope, the world we see is God's world. Learning to read both the book of Scripture and the book of nature with humility and care is a task worthy of the church's best efforts.
